Questions

The things worth knowing before you hand a stranger your payslip. If something here is not answered, ask Whoot inside the app.

Getting started

What does Whoot actually do?

It reads your Form 16, computes your tax under both the old and the new regime in full, and shows you which one leaves you better off and what you can still claim. Every figure it reports is tied to the section of the Income Tax Act behind it, so you can check any of it rather than taking it on trust.

How long does setup take?

Two questions and one file. You say which kind of filer you are, drop in your Form 16, and Whoot does the rest while you watch: it builds your report, works out your return form from your own figures, and switches on deadline reminders. It ends by showing you exactly what it did, with a way to undo every line.

What if I do not have my Form 16 yet?

You can carry on without it. Whoot will not build a report from nothing: a report with no figures in it would be a page of zeros, and it would stop the app ever asking you for the document again. It skips that step, says so, and asks for the Form 16 when you have it.

Your documents

What happens to my Form 16?

It is read in memory to pull out the figures, and your PAN is removed before any AI model sees the text. A copy is kept in your own document library so you do not have to find it again, and you can delete it from there whenever you like. The contents are never written to logs, and neither is any rupee amount.

Does my broker file get uploaded?

Your Schwab or Shareworks CSV is read on your device and the file itself never leaves it. Only the vest and sale rows it produced are saved, and only after the reader has understood them. A Zerodha tax P&L is read on the server in memory, and a copy is kept in your own document library so you can find it again.

Can I delete everything?

Yes. Settings has a full account deletion, and it removes your reports, documents and saved figures rather than hiding them. The same page shows you everything Whoot currently remembers about you in plain sentences, and lets you clear that on its own if you would rather keep the account.

The numbers

Is an AI deciding my tax?

No. Every rupee is computed by ordinary tested code, not by a language model. A model is used to read your documents and to write the explanations in plain English, and that is all. If the model is unavailable you still get the full figures, just without the prose.

Which ITR form should I file?

Whoot works it out from your figures rather than asking you to guess. Capital gains, vested shares from a foreign employer, foreign assets or income above the ITR-1 ceiling each rule out ITR-1, and it names which one applies to you. This matters: filing ITR-1 when one of those applies makes the return defective under section 139(9).

What is the AIS check?

Your banks and brokers report your interest and dividends straight to the department. If your return disagrees with what they reported, that gap is the most common reason a notice arrives. Whoot compares the two and shows you every disagreement. Sorted out before you file, it costs you nothing. Whoot cannot download your AIS for you, it sits behind your portal login, but it will read it the moment you drop it in.

I have RSUs. Is that handled?

Yes, and it is the part most tools get wrong. Vested shares from a foreign employer are taxed as salary when they vest, and again as capital gains on the change in value when you sell. Whoot works out both, checks whether your employer already put the vest value in your Form 16 so it is not counted twice, and prepares Schedule FA and Form 67 where they apply.

Money and limits

What does it cost?

The salaried report is free, including the savings it finds and the filing walkthrough. The paid product is the ITR-2 return with the foreign-equity workings, Schedule FA and Form 67, at ₹499. That is the work no free tool does, and it is the only place the price is defensible.

Does Whoot file my return for me?

No. It prepares every figure, tells you which form to use and walks you through the portal step by step, but you file it yourself on the income tax website. It also tracks the e-verify window afterwards, because a filed return that is never verified is treated as never filed at all.

Is this tax advice?

No. Whoot is a tool, not a chartered accountant, and it does not know anything about you it has not been told. Every figure is shown with the section it comes from precisely so you or your CA can check it. If your situation is complicated, get a professional to look at it.

What will Whoot not do?

It will not file for you, it cannot reach your income tax portal login, and it does not download your AIS or your Form 26AS. It does not yet fold gains from an Indian broker into your total tax liability, though it does use them to work out your return form. Anything it could not do, it says so on the screen rather than quietly leaving it out.
